This year's International Day of Peace, September 21, is celebrated in many places around the world. Amid increasing conflicts, poverty, and the impacts of climate change, it is an opportunity for the international community to review its commitments to sustainable development goals.
The United Nations General Assembly declared the International Day of Peace in a resolution in 1981 to promote ideas of peace between countries and peoples around the world. Since 2002, September 21 has been fixed as a day to honor peace worldwide.
This year's Day of Peace takes place with the world preparing to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, and the High Level Week of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly having which just opened in New York.
Last Wednesday UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the interconnectedness of peace and the well-being of both humanity and the environment.
He called on the international community to fight harder for peace, considering peace the responsibility not only of governments and leaders, but of everyone.
UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis reiterated the importance of peace for sustainable development and urged everyone to recommit to the SDGs to promote lasting peace.
“We know that sustainable development and sustainable peace are two side of the same coin. One can not be realized without the other. Let us recommit the SDGs and let us recommit to a world where our peace and security are reality for all,” said Francis.
In addition to activities commemorating the International Day of Peace in many parts of the world, the UN is expected to send strong messages about peace at UN meetings on Thursday. The United Nations by tradition will observe 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire around the globe.
